I was in an alliance. It was a few months of finally being out of the closet. I had to let the alliance know before something was said wrong. Well someone made a "filthy gays need to burn in hell" type of comment.
I reacted by saying "well, I'm gay. and it seems we are really good friends in this alliance." Well that friendship immediatly ended and started a war through out alliance chat. People were siding with me, and people were siding with the other guy.

The leader of our alliance said to both of us that we need to calm down and talk it out. The alliance leader said for the guy to deal with the fact that I was in the alliance and homosexual and that I needed to be calmer about someone saying stuff like that. I threated the alliance leader to leave for saying that.

I used the metaphore "If someone called a black man that he needed to go back to the plantation, you'd expect the black man to react. So why is it different for someone that is gay?" The leader still didn't get where I was coming from. I turned alliance chat off from that day on.

The alliance soon disbannded and the guild leader started a new on. I asked if I could join, but she said "you really need to keep the gay-thing on a low." I said, "I'm sorry that you feel that way, but I'm basically doing what African Americans did 30-40 years ago."

I haven't talked to that guild since...

-----another related topic-----

I also get insulted by people because I'm only 15 years old. Yes, I'm 15. That doesn't mean I act like every other 15 year old in the world.

For one, I am part of People to People - Student Ambassadors. We try to destroy the bad image of teens in America in the eyes of people of other countries. We are going to Europe this summer (France, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy) to see what life is like there, but we are also trying to follow the "destroy the bad image" at the same time.

For two, I have better morales than some 15 year olds. Some just think "sex sex sex" or "chuck norris chuck norris chuck norris" or "that's what she said... said... said" or whatever. I am not really into that. I'm into getting good grades (I have all A's currently), having a good social life - but good reputation at the same time, and have a goal of getting into college after school. I don't care about being immature. I never said I haven't ever been immature, but I really don't care about being immature. I see trying to learn spanish more interesting that trying to make people laugh by constantly using curse words and waving my middle finger into the air.
I think you're my missing twin lol!

I'm 15, had the same experiences, and what you said about morals (you did say morales actually xP) is so QFT. I'm glad I've had less problems with it personally, but now that I'm more self-aware... eugh. Like today, I was in UW, and I kept thinking "if they find out about me, who'd /ragequit first"? I need to get out of this habit fast... I use GW as an escape from my RL problems sometimes, not as a gate-way to more.

After reading this thread I think I have actually (lol) created some problems for myself. My old friend, (who I do like a lot and we always say stupid things to annoy eacher :P) was complaining about Gate of Madness, and saying how "gay" it was. I said "don't use gay as an insult ¬¬". To this he loled, and asked me if I was gay. Yeah... well... long story short I don't talk to him. It's sad actually, he acts as though he did nothing wrong... *meh*.

I also came out to my bi friend at school, and it was great actually talking to someone else in a simmilar situation in RL... you know? This thread is more important than I ever realised :P.

Just a question, what do Italians do for getting this bad reputation? :P

We all know koreans are 1337 hahaha.
ACtually I haven't really run into stereotypes in game probably cause we do not discuss each others private business (race gender etc...) maybe just geographic location thats it.

If you don't want to be stereotyped against then simply don't interact with people. I don't unless I'm doing a mission and my interaction usually stays focused towards what to do next. If you're standing in an outpost discussing with people about topics like politics, religion, and racism then expect to be the target of bigotry.

I myself get pretty offended by racist remarks in-game. The N-word and "faggot" (no red engine?) among many others are very painful and hurtful words, no matter where you use them.

Regarding my personal and discriminative in-game experiences, I've had very few. Aside from worthless assholes making lame-ass racist/sexist/bigotist jokes, a guy on my friends list stopped talking to me when I told him my mom was gay. One of my favorite experiences, though, was seeing a guy preach masochism in ACD1 two weeks ago. /report Player Name, 15 mins later he's off line. Haven't seen him come on since >: )

It was also pretty amusing seeing people qq about "all those damn Koreans" in RA and TA. It wasn't the Korean part that was funny, but the huge waterfall of tears.

That's the problem; this is an online RPG. Online means that, at some point, you're expected to interact with others. If I wanted to play on my own I'd still be playing console games... and in fact, sometimes I do wish to play on my own. I don't play much when my friends aren't online - I don't care if they are with me in the team, I can easily do stuff with heroes/henchies. This afternoon, I was vanquishing with H/H and 4 others were in a dungeon; now they had stuff to discuss between the three of them so I'm gonna go watch a movie with my husband while checking the comp every now and then.

Oh and of course I kinda went off-topic, as usual, but I shouldn't have to hide who I am to anyone. I deal with people who are different, why couldn't they? I might not be religious but I'll respect people who are... as long as they respect me.

That's an example of a close-minded opinion. As the OP said, this is an online RPG. The idea is to interact with other people. The ideal is that just like in real life, most people will respect others for their beliefs. On the internet it rarely happens, because the anonymity aspect is there. You don't know who the other person is, so there's little chance of repercussion.

Me, I don't care what you believe, what your sexual orientation is, gender, it just doesn't matter. As long as you act like a decent person, I'll respect you.

Guess my case is rather unique; I used to be racist against white people, because my race was often being picked on in this school I used to attend to. Although I do not express any hatred or discrimination to white people while I play the game or interact with any of them in real life, when it comes down to a conflict I have with them, I usually don't care to find a solution to these conflicts and just end the companionship I have. However, after playing Guild Wars for 33 months now, I have met some very friendly people who are white, and I guess after these time we shared together, I'm no longer racist. After reading this thread, I guess I am quite lucky to experience something like this.

A pretty good portion of the game is white. Most of the nice people AND most of the idiots are in fact white.

Thanks Stale ^.^

Rexion, sounds like that old guild leader in the Alliance was a closet homophobe; she probably tried to reason that if you were 'discreet' then there wouldn't be conflict (a disgusting turn of mind really).

On that note, I wonder how many people have been kicked from guilds for being homophobic and racist? A lot, I'm guessing. Some of them prossibly felt highly insulted. Eh, no loss to the world for ignoring them though.

*quitely shuts On Liberty* Shush.

Also, Earth: <3 I remembered that you were younger than you appear, but I didn't realise how young. Should I get you present?

Excellent comment.

How many players remember, at Prophecies' release, the emphasis to join PUGs to complete quests and missions? We didn't always like joining PUGs, but some times it could not be avoided. Today, PUGs are worse then before. While the player's knowledge of game mechanics has increased, the player's attitudes and opinions have gotten worse.

I'm not expecting to get along with everyone. Nor everyone to get along with me. But I think part of the reason this game is at it's current, almost anti-social state, is due to the negative inter-action between players. Such as the material being discussed in this topic. Who needs the hassle... meh.

I do. I started GW in July 2005, so nearly 3 years of gameplay. Maybe the community was more mature back then... but the "bad" PUG changed from: "good-natured player but sucks" to "awful personality, awful player..." most likely over time, or around Factions at least.

I don't get along with everyone given I have a fiery, alpha male kinda personality. I'm not some evil dictator and people seem to have fun teaming up with me 'cause I crack jokes and I talk a lot, but another portion will hate me for telling them how to do something. And introduce another alpha male in the team, both of us are going to try to prove they're better or at least equal than the other... it's not always easy teaming up with me :P. But if I don't the area, by all means, take the lead and I'll follow. So much for the typical gay stereotype eh? x]

You may be one of the exceptions, but generally people who behave this way are quite tiresome. Their jokes are never funny, and their banter is always inane. The only people I tolerate these traits in are in those who are directly responsible for signing my paychecks, and those whose pants I am trying to get into. Needless to say, random strangers in a game are neither.

I'm Asian (well, more like Asian-American you could say), and I try not to touch PvP with a 50-foot pole.

The faster humanity can see someone's identity, instead of their race/gender/beliefs, the faster racism/sexism/anything-ism will die out.

The OP isn't a bossy know-it-all, by the way. "Alpha Male" isn't how I'd describe him, he's more of a "I'll lead, unless one of you can do it better than I can" kind of person to me. He's nothing like an Onyxia Wipe group leader (if you don't know what that is, go to youtube and search for "Onyxia Wipe Animation") - he doesn't order the team around like slaves, he knows when he's at fault and doesn't throw blame around. His banter is not inane, anyhow.

See, that's the problems with stereotypes and archetypes. You say that you're something (for example, I say I'm Asian, and someone thinks that I'm a cute, preppy girl who loves anime, plays PvP, and uses chopsticks frequently) and people get a mental description of you that sort of "sticks" until they either shrug you off, or get to know you better.
